The longtime Simpsons voice actor confirmed on his official Twitter account Wednseday evening that he will no longer take on his iconic roles for the show.

Shearer, 71, has voiced some of the most memorable characters in animation, including Ned Flanders, Mr. Burns, Principal Skinner, and Waylon Smithers.

This because I wanted what we’ve always had: the freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best. (2/2)

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Shearer had been the sole holdout in contract negotiations with distributor Fox, which renewed The Simpsons for seasons 27 and 28. That will bring the Emmy-winning show to 625 total episodes.

Fox has not confirmed the departure or given any other details over its plans for the show going forward. It recently launched syndication of the show on sister network FXX in a deal rumored to be close to $1 billion.
