Nearly three months before its second season premiere, Starz has renewed pirate drama Black Sails for a third season.
The pay-for cable network made the new official at New York Comic Con after hinting at a renewal during last summer’s TCA presentations. With a 2.6 million season one premiere, the drama is one of Starz’s most popular series.
Starring Toby Stephens, Luke Arnold, and Hannah New, the show is set as a prequel to the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island. Its characters include the relationships and political drama between Captain Flint (Stephens), Long John Silver (Arnold), and other pirates as they search for a Spanish galleon filled with gold.
The announcement comes well before the Season Two premiere on January 24, 2015.
“Flint’s journey is riveting, and around him, Jon and Robert have woven an intricate web of conflict, betrayal, and redemption for the other characters that we believe will keep fans of the show coming back for more,” said Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik.
