Tomb Raider: Rise of the Tomb Raider was revealed at this year’s E3 in Los Angeles. It will be the second title of the franchise reboot starring the iconic Lara Croft.
While the exclusivity mentions the holiday for 2015, it is not uncommon for some exclusive titles to later release on other platforms. The official Tomb Raider Tumblr released a statement suggesting the game would be a permanent exclusive.
“This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4,” stated Darrell Gallagher, Head of Crystal Dynamics in the release.
The news comes as a surprise to many in the gaming community. Tomb Raider was largely a critical success. Despite publisher Square-Enix initially announcing lower-than-expected sales, the game did turn a profit earlier this year.
The original also featured many advances in technology initially catered to PC sales. The TressFX hair technology was developed for higher-end platforms not originally available on consoles.
Tomb Raider: Rise of the Tomb Raider will release holiday of next year. A feature film from MGM and GK Films is also in the works.
