In the second major shakeup this week, Marvel revealed today that Sam Wilson, long known as The Falcon, will take over as Captain America.
Wilson, one of the first African-American superheroes recognized in mainstream comic books, had previously been a regular partner for the shield-bearing icon. The release comes a day after Marvel announced that Thor would be reimagined as a female hero.
The Captain America announcement came via an episode of The Colbert Report, with a formal statement on Marvel.com.
“While Sam shares many of Steve’s beliefs in a general sense, he’s also a very different person with a very different background,” stated editor Steve Brevoort regarding the differences between Sam Wilson and the iconic Steve Rogers.
Fans can expect the first issue to drop this November, leading into an All-New Captain America series.
