Companies Release SDCC Plans as Official Schedule Looms

By Wes Smith

Several companies released panels and offsite event schedules today as Comic Con International prepares to release its official schedule.

Highlights of the morning press releases include the Warner Bros. Pictures panel schedules, Star Wars programming, SyFy panels, and a Sleepy Hollow virtual-reality experience. Clarification on an earlier announcement was also made as Arrow star Stephen Amell announced he would be hosting the DC Comics television panel on Saturday evening.

One of the larger panel announcements came from Warner Bros. as they confirmed three major film panels with The Hobbit, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Jupiter Ascending for Saturday morning in Hall H. This adds to the tentpole studio’s presence at the convention, combining with a Batman 75th special panel and a Godzilla experience on the lawn behind Hall H.

SyFy also announced several panels today. Helix and Defiance will host sessions in the Indigo Ballroom, Newcomers Ascension and Dominion will also make appearances. Last, the con will have a panel for Sharkando 2: The Second One in Room 6BCF on Thursday in response to the original’s surprise success.

Notably absent from the announcements were Disney and its Marvel properties. Though they announced Star Wars panels, mostly dealing with upcoming animated shows or the Hasbro toyline, word has been tight on anything related to Episode VII or The Avengers.

Rounding out the major events are several offsite events in the downtown San Diego area. Sleepy Hollow will be offering a “virtual reality experience” using Oculus Rift headsets. History’s Vikings will also host a highly-anticipated event in which fans can race ships in the bay or meet makeup artists to transform them with Nordic flair.

The news comes as Comic Con International, the non-profit that organizes SDCC each year, prepares to release their official schedule for the convention. The release is generally seen as on of the final pieces of major news before the convention itself, with Zachary Levi’s Nerd HQ usually close behind. Traditionally, CCI releases schedules exactly two weeks before a schedule panel is to be presented (Wednesdays on Wednesday, Thursday on Thursday, etc.)
